How Structural Steels Are Made?

The production process of structural steels involves series of different steps. These steps require special skills, extensive knowledge, and resource materials to finalize and realize the end product. The whole effort ends up with obtaining structural steel in different kinds and shapes, depending on the customer’s desires. In order to produce structural steel components for construction, the producer has to walk through the following steps:

Step 1: Determination of Customer Expectations

The degree of freedom in the determination of customer expectations step is limited to the desires of the client.  As the client, when you collaborate with a structural steel manufacturer who produces and supplies the processed materials at your service, you are free to choose materials that suit best for your project. It does not matter if sophisticated or ordinary structural parts. An experienced producer can address your needs and fulfill your desires.

Step 2: Creation of Technical Drawings

In the determination of customer expectations step, the producer will have to understand what exactly your desires are and realize these designs using special technical design software. You are free to present your own technical drawings to the producer in this step. Check all of the drawings, specifications, and code compliances your producer provides carefully to make necessary revises.

Step 3: Realization of Design

The producer is responsible for converting the drawings into shop drawings to complete the order. These shop drawings and planning will bind with your project’s logistics such as budget and deadlines. Shop drawings are essential for producers to make real objects out of technical drawings.

Step 4: Getting On with The Cutting and Drilling

Step 5: Marking of Pieces with Etching

Step 6: Assembly of Components

A soon as your producer is done with the cutting and shaping processes of parts, the production team will perform the assembly of these parts. In this step, the responsible people will do checking to be sure about everything going in the right direction.

Step 7: Machining of Custom Parts

In case you order custom structural steel parts, your producer will create the necessary custom metal parts in this step. These parts are needed when you require certain parts to fit a specific product or structure. When you are not content with the compatibility of standard parts with your project, you may need these kinds of custom parts.

Step 8: Completion of Whole Assembly

In this process step, your producer will aim to assemble all of the parts which are assembled previously. If required, parts can be partially assembled. If all of your structural steel parts are present and functional, the complete assembly is possible. If one of the previous steps is not performed properly, some changes might be needed to do.

Step 9: Preparation for Shipment

After all of the processes are properly done until this step, responsible people will disassemble all of the parts and prepare them for shipment or finishing operations. This step must be executed swiftly and properly by the vendor. If components are packaged and prepared well, rapid erection of the building is possible

Step 10: Finishing of Components

In case your produced structural steel parts require special finishing such as sandblasting, powder coating, etc. the producer will perform these finishing operations in this step. Generally, components used in industrial applications need some finishing operations in order to meet the necessities of regulations and codes. Your producer should possess the latest technological equipment for performing required finishing operations properly.

Step 11: Shipment of Project to Construction Site

Step 12: Construction of Project

After the components are delivered to you, your builders can erect the building. Your producer makes the construction easy for you by marking all of the components. In this way, minimum labor is needed.
